Death Metal is a hell of a lot of fun. I love this little dark slice of pie that both Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have created. It is both dark and darkly macabre. This title here is a spin off from the main event book.
This is better than a normal spinoff, however, than some other previous crossovers. Much, much better.
I am hesitant to reveal too much about the opening story of this book. It is written by Scott Snyder, James Tynion IV and Joshua Williamson with awesome art by Tony Daniel. Why am I so hesitant about saying anything?
Well, it involves Doctor Manhattan’s role in the Metal storyline. That is really as much as I can give away. I will say that the story is great and the art is truly fantastic. This is a fine first story that is both cosmic and grounded. It the best story this issue.
The next story is by Peter J. Tomasi with incredible art by Riley Rossmo.
It features that Robin King character that DC is trying to desperately make popular. It is a story about a confrontation between this annoying character and Alfred. Tomasi and Rossmo make it palpable though and it is exciting and well illustrated. It turns out this is tied for the second best story in the book here.
Writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Jamal Igle give us a story of Batmanasaurus Rex. It is fun but silly as hell. At least it is short. Let’s move on!
The tie for the second best story in the book goes to the the next story. It is by Frank Tieri and Francesco Francavilla, one of my favorite artists. It is a story that explores the inner workings of Castle Bat. It is well thought out and shows us a ritual that leads to bigger things to come.
Daniel Warren Johnson writes and Illustrates the next story. It is the story of Batmobeast. It is short and just plain nuts. Wonderfully nuts. Finally, writer Garth Ennis and artist Jo.elle Jones give us a story featuring Baby Batman which is both silly and edgy.
This is the best spinoff book I have seen come down the line of any It is essential if one is reading the Death Metal book. I had a lot of fun with this and I am glad I got a chance to sit down and savor this well done comic.
