‘Lucky Grandma’ Arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, and Kino Now August 11

Good Deed Entertainment and Kino Lorber are proud to announce the release of Sasie Sealy’s Lucky Grandma, available on Blu-ray and DVD August 11. Starring Tsai Chin (The Joy Luck Club), this darkly-humorous action heist comedy has been a hit with critics and audiences alike. Devika Girish in The New York Times said, “[Chin is] effortlessly funny with her dagger eyes and sardonic jibes.”

In response to closure of theaters due to COVID-19, Good Deed released Lucky Grandma on Kino Lorber’s virtual cinema platform Kino Marquee, sharing revenue with independent art houses across the country. Lucky Grandma was shown in virtual screening rooms in over 150 markets including New York, Los Angeles, Portland, San Francisco, Denver, Seattle, Washington DC, Vancouver, and Toronto, among many others.

Lucky Grandma will be released on Blu-ray and DVD on August 11, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $19.95 for the DVD. Bonus features include a behind-the-scenes featurette, and the trailer. The film will also be available digitally to stream on Kino Now.

In the heart of Chinatown, New York, an ornery, chain-smoking, newly widowed 80-year-old Grandma (Tsai Chin, The Joy Luck Club) is eager to live life as an independent woman, despite the worry of her family. When a local fortune teller (Wai Ching Ho) predicts a most auspicious day in her future, Grandma decides to head to the casino and goes all in, only to land herself on the wrong side of luck… suddenly attracting the attention of some local gangsters. Desperate to protect herself, Grandma employs the services of a bodyguard from a rival gang (Corey Ha) and soon finds herself right in the middle of a Chinatown gang war.

Director Sasie Sealy brings to life a dark comedy about immigrant life, the vulnerabilities of aging, and an unexpected friendship. Set in alleyways and underground mahjong parlors with a cast of richly drawn characters (including Taiwanese movie star Corey Ha), Lucky Grandma is a love letter to Chinatown and an homage to all the badass elderly women who inhabit it.
