Media Watch: Hello ‘Peacemaker’, Goodbye ‘Supergirl’, ‘Loki’ Resumes, ‘Helstrom’ Trailer & More!

John Cena’s Peacemaker Series Is Coming To HBO Max

Oh f*ck, it’s Peacemaker! HBO Max is set to explore the origins of the Peacemaker character, the master of weapons from the highly anticipated upcoming The Suicide Squad film, in the new Max Original action-adventure-comedy series Peacemaker. HBO Max has given a straight-to-series order of eight episodes for the first season of the show. John Cena will reprise his role from The Suicide Squad movie to star in the series, and the film’s acclaimed writer/director James Gunn will write all eight episodes of Peacemaker and will direct multiple episodes, including the first. Gunn and The Suicide Squad producer Peter Safran will serve as executive producers of the series, with Cena as co-executive producer. Based on characters from DC, Peacemaker will be produced by Gunn’s Troll Court Entertainment and The Safran Company in association with Warner Bros. Television. Peacemaker is scheduled to begin production in early 2021, prior to Gunn beginning work on the next Guardians of the Galaxy film.

While details about Peacemaker are being kept under wraps, the series will explore the origins of the character that Cena will play in the upcoming film, a man who believes in peace at any cost — no matter how many people he has to kill to get it. The series will extend the world that Gunn is creating for The Suicide Squad movie, which is scheduled to be released in theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on August 6, 2021.

James Gunn said: “Peacemaker is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag. I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series. And of course, to be able to work again with John, Peter, and my friends at Warner Bros. is the icing on the cake.”

John Cena said: “I have said before that it has been a tremendous honor and an incredible opportunity to be part of The Suicide Squad and to work with James on what is going to be a fantastic movie. I am unbelievably excited to have the chance to team up with him again for Peacemaker. We can’t wait for fans to see this.”

“James Gunn has the unique ability to create an expansive universe while also bringing to life the soul and wit of each character. We look forward to a deep dive into the world of Peacemaker,” said Casey Bloys, Chief Content Officer for HBO and HBO Max.

Supergirl to End With Upcoming Season

The CW and producers Warner Bros TV and Berlanti Productions have announced that the upcoming sixth season of the series, Supergirl, will be it’s last.

With delays as a result of the COVID pandemic, dwindling ratings and star Melissa Benoist’s pregnancy, it was decided that the series will conclude with a longer 20 episode season to tie things together.

Over the years there have been many cast changes, but cast members who have been there from the beginning include Benoist, Chyler Leigh and David Harwood. The season five cast also included Katie McGrath, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines, Azie Tesfai, Andrea Brooks, Julie Gonzalo, Staz Nair, and guest star Jon Cryer.

No word yet if Benoist is open to reprising the character down the line in any capacity in the upcoming Superman & Lois series starring Tyler Hoechlin and Elizabeth Tulloch as the iconic couple, which will premiere this season.

Benoist commented on the news on Twitter:

Trailer Released For Hulu’s Helstrom

Hulu has released the official Helstrom trailer for the upcoming horror series adaptation based on the Marvel comic book character. All 10 episodes will premiere on October 16th.

Helstrom follows siblings and supposed serial killer offspring Daimon Helstrom (Tom Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Sydney Lemmon). Plagued by their family background, the Helstrom’s will pursue the world’s vilest of the vile — with some family drama of their own.

Daimon is a professor of ethics who moonlights as an exorcist. Daimon has no illusions about saving a world he has no patience for; he just hopes he can help a few of the people closest to him. In his battle against a hidden world, Daimon is determined to root out demons as they arise, and will not stop until they’re vanquished.

Ana runs a successful auction house and suffers no fools, but her true interest lies in hunting down those who hurt others. Traumatized by her father as a child, Ana is driven to rid the world of those like him, even as she secretly worries her father will return.

The series stars Austen (Grantchester, The Royals) as Daimon, Lemmon (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ana, Elizabeth Marvel (Homeland, Unbelievable) as Victoria Helstrom, Ariana Guerra (Raising Dion) as Gabriella Rosetta, Robert Wisdom (Ballers) as the Caretaker, June Carryl (Mindhunter) as Dr. Louise Hastings, and Alain Uy (The Passage) as Chris Yen.

Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers Renewed

Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers have both been picked up for two more seasons at Fox, with Family Guy now running through Season 20 and Bob’s Burgers’ renewal taking the show to its 13th season.

Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are key pillars of our network’s success,” said Michael Thorn, president of entertainment for Fox Entertainment. “By taking the genre to new heights and driving pop culture in meaningful ways, they’ve laid the foundation for making Animation Domination one of the most powerful program blocks in all of television. Both of these two-season renewals affirm once again our commitment to animation and empower us to continue in our build as the leader in the space with distinct and fresh new comedies. We’d like to thank Seth, Loren and their entire teams, not to mention our partners at 20th Television, and we’re excited to continue these great shows with them.”

Fox’s Sunday animation fall block will debut on September 27.

Production Resumes On Disney+’s Loki

In a recent interview with Forbes, Gugu Mbatha-Raw revealed a new production update about Loki by confirming they’ve already restarted filming on the Tom Hiddleston-led Disney+ series.

“I’m obviously sworn to secrecy about everything to do with Loki, but it feels great to be back,” Mbatha-Raw said. “Everyone is trying to do it as safely as possible under the circumstances, and it feels good. I’m excited. It’s a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see it.”

Hiddleston last portrayed the God of Mischief in Avengers: Endgame, where he successfully had stolen the Tesseract during Iron Man and Ant Man’s failed attempt to retrieve it. Joining Hiddleston are MCU newcomers Sophia Di Martino (Yesterday, Flowers, Into the Badlands), Oscar nominee Owen Wilson (The Royal Tenenbaums), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror: San Junipero), Cailey Fleming (The Walking Dead), and Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) with Di Martino rumored to play Lady Loki.

Steppenwolf Actor Reveals Snydercut Details

During an interview with NME promoting his latest movie The Man in the Hat, actor Ciaran Hinds took the time to reveal his excitement for Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

For those unaware, Hinds plays (played?) the villain Steppenwolf in Justice League, a character who was largely criticized after reshoots more or less gave the big bad a complete makeover.

“It was [Zack Snyder’s] dream to realize it, and I think it’s fantastic that he’s got this opportunity to realize what he wanted to do in the first space. He has the chance to recreate what he wanted to do and I hope it stands up to the trial it’s been given.”

The actor also discussed the much publicized reshoots, during which he remained isolated from the rest of the cast.

“All the work I did was almost completely solitary,” Hinds said. “The pick-ups I did were just in a studio in London. I was a gun for hire who came in to clean up one or two bits they wanted to do, but I really wasn’t there long enough to form any particular opinion apart from trying to help fulfill my contract.”
