Richard Jenkins Comedy The Last Shift Trailer Released

Sony Pictures has released the official trailer for The Last Shift, the upcoming comedy starring Oscar nominee Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water, The Visitor, Nightmare Alley).

The Last Shift is an American story about two men struggling in the same town, while worlds apart. Stanley (Richard Jenkins), an aging fast-food worker, plans to call it quits after 38 years on the graveyard shift at Oscar’s Chicken and Fish. His last weekend takes a turn while training his replacement, Jevon (Shane Paul McGhie), a talented but stalled young writer whose provocative politics keep landing him in trouble. These two who share little in common are brought together through circumstance. Noah Hawley Offers Star Trek Movie Update

In an interview with Variety, Fargo writer/director Noah Hawley revealed his Star Trek movie “still alive, just in stasis” and is awaiting a decision from new studio president Emma Watts, who previously worked with the writer/director on his feature debut Lucy in the Sky during her time as an exec at Fox. He also revealed his Star Trek script is finished and he was already lining up designers for production and would instead introduce new characters while offering explicit connections to the previous franchise.

“We’re not doing Kirk and we’re not doing Picard,” Hawley said. “It’s a start from scratch that then allows us to do what we did with Fargo, where for the first three hours you go, ‘Oh, it really has nothing to do with the movie,’ and then you find the money. So you reward the audience with a thing that they love.”

Watts recently was appointed to Paramount Motion Picture Group and is currently reassessing the forthcoming film slate for the studio, namely the state of the Star Trek film franchise, which has been up in the air for the past four years as various projects were put into development beginning with a fourth film helmed by S.J. Clarkson before being shelved due to cast contracting issues, an R-rated film helmed by Quentin Tarantino penned by Mark L. Smith (The Revenant) and Hawley’s project.

Junkie XL Previews His Justice League Theme

Composer Tom Holkenborg, aka Junkie XL, released a sneak peak at his upcoming score for Zack Snyder’s Justice League.

One of the aspects of Zack Snyder’s Justice League to get the axe was Junkie XL’s music. The composer provided additional music for Man of Steel before co-scoring Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice alongside Hans Zimmer. He was set to score Justice League and his soundtrack was completed before WB replaced Snyder with Joss Whedon. As a result, Holkenborg was kicked off the project and the theatrical cut of the superhero epic arrived with an all new score by Danny Elfman that incorporated Elfman’s Batman theme as well as bits of John Williams’ Superman.

The Snyder Cut plans to incorporate Junkie XL’s original music.

Trailer Released For Books of Blood

Hulu has released the first teaser for Brannon Braga’s upcoming film adaptation of Clive Barker’s classic horror anthology novel series Books of Blood, offering us our first preview of the cast led by Tomorrowland‘s Britt Robertson. The film will be available for streaming on Wednesday, October 7.

Consisting of six books published between 1984-85, the anthology which mostly covered the horror genre with the occasional fantasy element mixed in, received rave reviews from critics and readers alike, with legend Stephen King calling Barker the “future of horror.” Some of the film’s individual stories have already been adapted for the big and small screen, namely “The Forbidden,” which became the cult classic Candyman, and The Midnight Meat Train.

Tenet Is Coming To California’s Drive-In Theaters

For those in Los Angeles who have been avoiding heading to an indoor theater to see the latest Christopher Nolan blockbuster due to the safety concerns, the wait has paid off as Tenet is coming to select drive-in theaters in the Southern California region.

The decision to screen the film at drive-ins comes on the heels of the revelation at the end of August that Warner Bros. had issued a mandate to exhibitors that it would only be releasing the film in drive-ins in areas in which indoor theaters were also open, therefore if state or local governments were keeping indoor theaters closed, the local drive-ins would not be allowed to show Tenet.

With indoor theaters currently closed in the greater LA area, it’s unclear why WB is reversing their decision on the mandate. It could come from the studio’s hope to make back its money on the film sooner, given it’s Nolan’s most expensive original film to date with a $200 million budget, or just from WB’s desire to bring the film to LA audiences, who are one of the groups that are pretty instrumental in Nolan’s box office hits, but no matter the case this proves to be an exciting revelation for SoCal audiences.

Sam Elliott To Succeed Adam West As Family Guy‘s Mayor

Oscar nominee Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born, Road House) has joined the Family Guy voice cast to succeed the late Adam West as mayor of Quahog, RI. After paying tribute to the late actor (West passed away in 2017) and debuting his final episodes, the show acknowledged his death during an episode that featured the high school being renamed after him.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, executive producer Richard Appel told the outlet:

“We wanted to take the time to respect Adam. In having a conversation about ‘How do you replace him?,’ the universal belief was: he’s irreplaceable. And then the next question is, ‘Do you find a new mayor?’ In the world of Family Guy, he had an important role, and a role that was necessary for a lot of stories.”

Finding a new mayor, the producers were “faced with a difficult question” in who would be as “original and unexpected and comedically fun and fresh” as West was.

“Sam has a voice that — obviously he’s a movie star but he also has a voice made for radio, and Sam Elliot quickly became our first choice,” said Appel.

Elliott will voice Mayor West’s cousin in the animated series, whose first and middle names are Wild, aka, Wild Wild West. Wild West comes to Quahog when Peter becomes unhappy with the candidates in consideration for the job and decides that the town needs a celebrity figure who is fun.

Family Guy will return for its 19th season on September 27 on Fox.
