‘Batgirl #50’ (review)

Written by Cecil Castellucci
Art by Emanuela Lupacchino,
Aneke, Marguerite Sauvage
Published by DC Comics

It is sad that this series is ending.

The book was pretty much on life support before writer Cecil Castellucci came aboard. She really was a breath of fresh air for the book and she did a great job of making the stories matter.

This is a good and oversized final issue as well.

The first few pages show Barbara and Commissioner Gordon at a graveyard. They are burying someone. I won’t spoil who it is being buried but it is a pretty significant character.

Suffice to say, this is what pushes the story in motion. It is heartbreaking and really well handled.

Barbara and Commissioner Gordon go get some food. They talk some. They are both reeling from this death. Then, we get to see Barbara get up and try to get back to her life. We see her question a lot of her decisions.

Chief among them? Her decision to keep being Batgirl.

We get to see Barbara’s struggles handled in a very real way. Barbara goes back and forth. She might just quit as Batgirl and that will be the end of it.

But can she let it go? Is the call of being a crimefighter too strong for her? The answers are both emotional and exceptional.

Castellucci writes an amazing script here. It is not only well done, it is also very human. The artwork in this issue is by a few people. Emanuela Luppachino’s art is the standout here.

It is sad that this series is ending with this issue. But what a way to go. Well done.
