‘Rorschach #1’ (review)

Written by Tom King
Art by Jorge Fornes
Published by DC Comics

When I heard that this was coming out, I wasn’t too sure how to feel.

Then I looked at the creative team and I knew that I shouldn’t have worried. This team was an instant recipe for success. Together, they have done some of the best Batman comics in recent years so this was sure to follow suit.

The opening scene has Rorschach running on a scaffolding. He screaming the name “Laura.”

Then, he is gunned down and shot in the head. We see that it is all happening above a political event that is going on at the time and eventually learn it was a failed assassination attempt.

Yes, this opening completely threw me off. Who is this version of Rorschach?

Who is this “Laura” that he is talking about? Just what is going on here? We then see two men in a control room who seem to be agents. They talk about President Robert Redford and not trusting his people.

That is when things start coming together.

By the end of the issue, we get the answers to some of the questions raised throughout the issue. It has some of the Watchmen characters in this. It has a lot of new characters and concepts. I have to say that I am intrigued for sure and I look forward to where this takes us.

The story by Tom King is awesome. It is smart and well conceived. The art by Jorge Fornes is the best of his career. It evokes the classic Watchmen style by Dave Gibbons but it completely stands on it’s own. This is one of the best new comic books of the year. Well done.

RATING: A+
