This is another one of the Superman books that Brian Michael Bendis writes with no passion.
It is a shame honestly. He works with some of the best artists in the business but he can’t seem to put out a good story these days. This book is as flat as it could possibly be.
Superman may be defeated!
The beginning of this issue shows a beaten Superman who may not be able to bounce back. But he’s Superman. We all know that he will.
And Bendis doesn’t give us any reason to believe otherwise.
So, the tension is immediately gone.
The Invisible Mafia are the villains of this storyline and they are fairly lame.
They have unleashed an evil from another dimension here and it it up to the House of El and a bunch of other groups to try to contain this evil. It gets downright stupid as the battle just keeps going on.
We also see the fate of the Daily Planet in this storyline. I am completely aghast and exhausted from Bendis at this point.
This book doesn’t feel like anything truly significant happens. It is the comic book equivalent of the phrase “spinning your wheels.”
The sole bright spot of the issue is the artwork by John Romita, Jr. He draws really well. He cannot cover the deficiencies in the script however, of which there are many.
The readers deserve a better Superman than this for sure.
