Why would anyone want to mess with perfection?
There better be a damn good reason for it! Yes, I loved the original Sweet Tooth series. It was a beautifully realized series that is pretty unforgettable. When I heard that Lemire was doing this, I was rightfully concerned.
So, how is this new series?
Well, it is good.
It is also unlike anything I could have imagined. It is definitely a “reimagining” more than a sequel or a reboot. We are immediately given a “300 years later” tag at the beginning of the issue. We are also immediately introduced to a new young “Sweet Tooth.” Who is he and what is his relationship with the previous series?
We see that he has dreams.
The dreams that he has are of characters from the first series. He sees the “big man.” He sees the original Sweet Tooth. Then, he wakes up.
What happened in this dream?
Does it relate to the world he is living in? Just what is actually going on here?
We get to see this character’s world. We are introduced to a whole new set of circumstances. And it seems that there is a new mystery at play and a new adventure. It has the feel of the first series but it a totally new thing.
And it is pretty damn awesome to boot.
Lemire does a great job both writing and Illustrating this book. The story is strong and the art is pretty perfect. Lemire is an auteur and he proves it on every page.
This is truly awesome and I am happy and glad to have read it. Well done.
