‘Victor and Nora: A Gotham Love Story’ (review)

Written by Lauren Myracle
Art by Isaac Goodhart
Published by DC Comics

These DC young adult books have been really something else.

They tell stories of characters in the DC Universe and they put a spin on them, mostly for younger readers. That doesn’t mean that they are completely soft or anything. Far from it. Instead, this book is another fantastic story from that DC line of young adult graphic novels.

The focus this time is on Mr. Freeze and his beloved Nora.

When we first see Victor Fries, we see that he is seventeen years old. This is a smart move making him this age because it gives younger readers someone to relate to instantly. Victor’s brother has died in a house fire and he had become distant from his parents as a result.

Victor retreats into the only thing that makes sense to him: Science.

We then get to meet Nora. She is a seventeen year old girl who is suffering from a crippling illness. It isn’t long before these two young adults cross paths and fall in love. It is very sweetly done.

We get to see a summer where anything is possible for these two.

They fall in love.

But Nora’s illness starts really making things tough for her. It is then that Victor decides to use his love of science to help Nora. This leads into a tragedy that changes them both forever.

Lauren Myracle writes an amazingly sensitive and smart script here.  You know what is going to happen but it is so well done that you don’t care. The artwork by Isaac Goodhart is perfect as well. His art is expressive and wonderful.

This is a great standalone story that resonates extremely well.
