If 2020 had been normal, the Black Widow movie would have long left the multiplex and have made its Disney+ debut. Along the way, it might have introduced new readers via your local comic shop or the Marvel app.
Alas, here we are.
In the meantime, Black Widow has a pretty solid series of her own.
We also have this one-shot that serves as a reintroduction to characters that were slated to appear in the film.
Yelena Belova, who at one time was a Black Widow, appears to be living the life of a mercenary. She is on a mysterious mission to a former S.H.I.E.L.D. facility. Little does she know that the Red Guardian is being held at this location.
Surrounded and trapped, these two team up to fight their way out.
I generally welcome Devin Grayson’s work. I’m certainly glad to see her and hope she gets more opportunities. This story does the work of introducing these characters to fans that may not be all that familiar. There are some pretty neat action sequences written in. But writing the caption boxes for Yelena in a syntax that I guess was supposed to be Russian via Google Translate didn’t seem to work as intended. It almost felt like when writers try to get too cute writing Bizarro.
Overall, this one shot is a worthy read. Great art and good action scenes save the day.
