There might be no better measure of a pop artist’s influence than to be parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.
Yet, Lady Gaga turned down the legendary song spoofer after the single was completed.
Weird Al’s response was to not release the song, despite the single easily legally falling under parody, and instead post it on YouTube.
“I have no problem with allowing people to hear it online, because I also have a personal policy not to completely waste my stinking time,” he said.
But things became interesting once the single became a hit (currently at almost 450,000 visits), and Ms. Gaga suddenly had a change of heart, perhaps inspired by Yankovic’s promise to donate all proceeds from the single to the Human Rights Campaign, an organization that supports gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered rights.
