DEEP GOLD (review)

Produced by Michael Gleissner, Les Nordhauser
Written by Michael Gleissner, Frederick Bailey
Directed by Michael Gleissner
Starring Bebe Pham, Laury Prudent,
Jaymee Ong, Kersten Hui, Michael Gleissner

Filmed on location in the Phillipines, Deep Gold is reminiscent to the Zalman King/Andy Sidaris productions that feature attractive actors, stunning cinematography and lush locations.

Freediving champion Amy Sanchez and her sister Jesse team up to discover the whereabouts of Amy’s boyfriend, Tony dela Cruz, an Air Force pilot who had vanished with his plane with several million dollars of gold aboard.  As the sisters investigate Tony’s disappearance further, they uncover details that places them both in the center of an intricate conspiracy.
Co-writer/director Gleissner has crafted a fresh take on a classic style of adventure film; the characters are not cartoons and the action sequences are well executed.  Underwater sequences are also visually impressive and lead actress Bebe Pham (a Vietnamese top model) is stunning.
Deep Gold is a throwback to the fondly remembered late night cable movies that ran throughout the Eighties, and a reminder of what the major studios tend to forget; that movies are meant to be escapist entertainment.
