One of the most distinctive artists in the comic book industry, Gene Colan passed away from complications from the result of a broken hip and his ongoing battle with liver cancer. Part of the Marvel Comics Bullpen in the sixties and seventies, Colan illustrated memorable work on Daredevil, Iron Man, Tomb of Dracula Howard The Duck, Captain America, Doctor Strange, The Sub-Mariner, and The Avengers. He was the co-creator of the Falcon (with Stan Lee), one of the most prominent African American heroes.
His work for DC Comics included Night Force, Nathaniel Dusk, Silverblade, Jemm Sun of Saturn, Wonder Woman, and amazing runs on both the Batman and Detective Comics titles.
According to the wishes of both Gene and his daughter, Nanci, Gene’s agent and friend, Clifford Meth is setting up the Gene Colan Scholarship at the Joe Kubert School.
In lieu of flowers and such, if you would like to contribute to this scholarship in Gene’s memory, please make your check payable to “Joe Kubert School” and mail it to his attention:
