The last two issues of this series were hard to get through. The art is absolutely gorgeous as always but the story jumped around too much. I never knew exactly where I was. Sometimes that can work with a story.
Luckily, this issue is a little more streamlined than the previous issues. That’s a good thing indeed.
The first couple of pages focus on Rick Araki.
We get to see that he has never left the States. But he is going overseas to track down Pearl. The first two pages show us that journey in an almost documentary style. It’s very entertaining.
Then, Araki meets up with Pearl in a night club in Japan. They meet and have a conversation.
Needless to say, Pearl is thrilled that he did that. She gives him a kiss and calls him her boyfriend.
It’s admittedly very sweet.
Pearl decides to call it a night and says to the bad guys that there is to be a meeting tomorrow to bring it all to an end. So, Pearl and Araki leave. And then, we see a lovemaking scene that goes on a little too long. It seemed rather pointless.
Then, Pearl has her meeting. She makes a deal to have her father freed from a prison. Then, Araki finishes up the issue with cute last scene that actually worked pretty well.
Even though it flies by, this issue worked for me better than most of the series. Bendis really knows how to write the character of Araki and makes it fun. The rest of the characters aren’t as entertaining but that’s okay. This issue is definitely one of the high points of the series, so I’ll take it.
