‘Eternity Girl #5’ (review)

Written by Magdalene Visaggio
Illustrated by Sonny Liew
Published by DC Comics

Despite its similarities to the strange, sad tale of Element Girl, Eternity Girl continues to impress.

The latest issue sees Caroline Sharp approached on two fronts–by her old ally Never Man, and by Crash, the cosmic DJ affiliated with the lords of Chaos and Order. The two make their points as Sharp hovers between a decision on whether to destroy or spare existence.

While Magdalene Visaggio’s script jumps around ably between planes of existence without skipping a beat, Sonny Liew breaks out with his amazing layouts. A splash page confrontation between Caroline and Rick, the Never Man, manages to hop between realities, using panels to illustrate the schism without breaking up the page.

Of course, some of the more psychedelic imagery recalls Marvel Age Steve Ditko, as do his lanky figures and expressive faces.

The series continues to enthrall and even confound a bit as it heads toward the edge of existence. Few other books right now have me scratching my head quite as happily as Eternity Girl.
