‘Aquaman #39’ (review)

Written by Dan Abnett
Illustrated by Joe Bennett
Published by DC Comics

This is part two of a storyline crossing over with Suicide Squad.

Atlantis has risen to the surface and it’s battle time! The Suicide Squad wants to sink the place and it’s up to Aquaman to stop them. Abnett is finishing his run on this title with this storyline.

And it is completely and utterly bananas. I mean, the story is called “Sink Atlantis!” so there you go!

The story starts off with Mera on the throne after her coronation. She is thinking she needs to make peace with the surface world.

Aquaman knows that Atlantis is now a target and he is preparing for the end.

Then we cut to the Suicide Squad arguing about what to do with the nuke they have. Some are disgusted and surprised that they are being sent to destroy Atlantis.

Others, look at it as just a mission. The standard cliche moral arguments start up. Thankfully, they don’t last long.

So then,  Aquaman and gang attack the Suicide Squad and it’s a hell of a battle! After the attack, Mera yells at Aquaman and asks him just what the hell was he thinking! He tells Mera that he wanted to give her deniability.

At the end, Mera tells Aquaman that it’s time to play dirty! About time, they’re about to be blown up by a nuke!

She tells Aquaman to dig up all of the criminals he knows to launch a counter attack against the Suicide Squad and to defend Atlantis!

The story is fine enough and a good time for the most part. Bennett does a decent job on art as well.

Overall, this is a fun enough issue and a nice second chapter of the story.
