The first storyline in this book was a little hit or miss for me.
It felt like very little happened after a really great setup. This starts a new story and it isn’t bad at all. I am a little hesitant to enjoy it too much because I feel like I have been at this place before.
Hopefully, history doesn’t repeat itself.
The issue starts off promising enough. Selina is in a jewelry store looking at some earrings. I love that Jones started the issue off here. It may seem like a simple setup, but Jones makes it work well.
The man helping her out insults her by saying that the earrings may in fact be too expensive for her. He implies that she should call her husband. She then gives him a cat like stare. And then in the next scene, Selina is walking down the street wearing the earrings.
I love how that scene set up the entire story.
From there we get a brutal scene involving the Penguin. He comes in from the airport and he commits a murder that has to be seen to be believed. The Penguin seemingly murders his chauffeur for being late and for annoying him. This was a crazy scene. And from here, you just know that he and Catwoman will be crossing paths. Now it’s all a matter of when and how and why.
From there, Catwoman goes out for a night around the city. The Penguin wants to get her attention for some reason. He starts blowing things up! He blows up a Ferris wheel in hopes to catch her attention. And then he tried some other forms of attack.
The rest of the issue is basically Catwoman fighting the Penguin’s goons. It’s wonderfully drawn and choreographed. This leads right up to the last panel where the Penguin is meeting up with Catwoman and offering her a seat. It’s a pretty damn good ride up to that point.
Jones does a nice job writing for the other artists in this book. It’s the first part of a two part story and while it doesn’t have a lot of meat, at least it keeps you going. It’s a simple trifle it seems, but an effective one. I look forward to finding out what the Penguin wants from Catwoman next issue.
