I was so excited about this issue. The Joker returns to Gotham City! What can be better than that?
Well, the creative team of this issue is Peter J. Tomasi and Doug Mahnke. I couldn’t believe my eyes.
This issue does not disappoint in the least either. It’s fast, funny, and above all, really well done.
The opening scene is quite amazing. Alfred comes in and tells Bruce that the sun is almost down and that there is something that he needs to see. Apparently, the Joker sent out a message that went viral.
The whole thing is a nice and ominous set up for the rest of the issue.
Bruce gets ready.
Then we cut over to the Joker appearing and acting nuts. Tomasi has a great handle on his character and dialogue and Mahke has him down cold.
It’s an awesome introduction to the Joker in the story, maybe the next Ive ever seen. And that’s really saying something.
The Joker has taken over an amusement park. He wreaks havoc through it. The Joker has had it with the Legion of Doom and he wants to make his own way int the world. So he does what he always does and acts like a complete loon.
That is, until Batman shows up.
The Joker and Batman have a fight. And that’s pretty much it. It does tie into a bigger storyline as we see at the end. Mr Freeze gets an offer from Lex Luthor and it looks like the next issue could be very interesting indeed.
Tomasi and Mahnke make for a dream team. The art and the story are tops here. I really love the direction this comic book has taken. It’s only getting better and better and it’s a good thing. I also like that this a a stand alone issue and you don’t really have to read anything else. This is great. It’s at the top of my reading list whenever it comes out!
