Anytime Frank Miller decides to play in the world of the Dark Knight Universe that he had created, it is a real treat.
This time, he has brought along artist Rafael Grampá with him.
Having Grampá on this is a the real draw. He rarely does art and usually it is just covers. Having a full story with him drawing the whole book throughout is just phenomenal. And let me tell you, Christmas has come early. This one-shot is absolutely fantastic.
The beginning of the book shows us who the “Golden Child” in question is. It is young Jonathan Kent, seen hanging out with his sister, Lara.
Since he the son of Superman and Wonder Woman, we all know that he has some power in him.
This first page sets up the rest of the book quite well.
We then go forward in time.,Three years have passed since the events of Dark Knight III: The Master Race.
Jonathan and Lara are hanging out above the city waiting for something to happen on the ground. Then, they hear something and go to investigate it. They come across a mob of people who aren’t too happy about the people in charge of the government. There is a clever allegory to our President Trump in this. The people in the street are in the middle of an uprising. In the midst of all of this is Carrie Kelley, dressed as Batwoman.
We get to see Carrie Kelley fully formed now in her role as Batwoman. We also get to see Lara in a better place. She has discovered what it is truly like to be human. Miller has really taken these characters into some unexpected places. It is wonderful to see.
There may be more to this “Trump” leader than we originally see. It may even have to do with Darkseid, and a newly remade Joker. I don’t want to spoil the twist with this character but it is a very good one. Eventually, Batwoman and Lara become embroiled in a conflict with them.
Eventually, we see how “The Golden Child” known as Jonathan comes to be a part of this wacky story. It is very entertaining and full of modern day Miller wackiness. Even if it threatens to go too much overboard, Grampá just streamlines everything with his art.
And man, the art. It is one of the best art jobs I have seen in a long time. Grampá is a genius. I hope that it doesn’t take as long until we see his next art job. But I’ll be salivating over this one until then. This is awesome.
