I was happy to hear that Tom Taylor and Bruce Redondo were set to work on this title. I don’t feel like the last Suicide Squad series was to my liking. And the movie that came out certainly wasn’t to my liking. So I was finally hopeful that we might get a decent series with these characters.
Was I happy with this after reading it?
Well, it is pretty damn good. In the first scene, a person giving a press conference is kidnapped. Since that person is important, people freak out. Then, the team that stole him launch an attack on some submarines and stuff. Who is going to have to deal with all of this?
That’s right. The Suicide Squad.
Their introduction in this series is pretty hilarious. Task Force X is back in full swing and they have a mission. This is how I remember the Suicide Squad that I liked so much: Funny, smart, and with a constant threat of brutality.
So, off they go to fight against these villains!
It is pretty fun and really wild. There are some twists and turns. Somebody gets their head blown up, Task Force X style. And then near the end, Amanda Waller quits. There is hardly any time to take it all in, however. The Squad itself may in fact be compromised. The last panel shows just how big the ramifications of that may be.
It is a pretty fun read. The book is much better than the previous incarnation. But it still has a long way to go to match the manic tone of the original. I think that it can get there, though. Time will tell.
