I am not a huge fan of the direction that they have taken with Supergirl during this whole “Year of the Villain” storyline. It just feels like they have been treating her like a second stringer repeatedly through every event we have had these past few years. There is a new creative team on this issue, however. That made it a little more interesting for me. And how did the new team do?
They did great. I should have expected it, looking back.
Jody Houser is an incredible writer and she opens up this issue perfectly. We to see things from the perspective of the Supergirl who has been infected with madness.
It is wonderfully handled and makes a lot of sense. While I am still not a fan of this direction, it is very well handled.
We get to see her flying over the city. A school bus is in trouble. This version of Supergirl goes to save it. It is a remarkable scene that really shows the he struggle that Supergirl is going through internally. It makes you cringe but it also demands your attention.
In the same scene, Supergirl grabs the person responsible and is ready to kill him. Luckily, Superman shows up, just as she is ready to end the perpetrator’s life. They talk for a little. And it isn’t long before the both of then are fighting each other, as super people do.
The fight in this part is wonderfully handled. Supergirl gets away from Superman, but then has Batman to contend with. Supergirl and Batman have one hell of a fight and then she just tosses Batman away. Thankfully, Superman is there to catch him.
By the end of the issue, Supergirl has her own madness to contend with. It is a pretty sharp ending. Houser does a great job writing this issue and Stott is the perfect collaborator handling the artwork. All in all, it is a solid issue and I hope to see more from this creative team with this character.
