‘Action Comics #1019’ (review)

Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by John Romita, Jr.
Published by DC Comics

This book has been a bit of a tease the last few issues.

What I mean is that the book has all the elements of a good story, but it never quite got there. Instead of having a cool story, we are left with the fits and starts of one. It all never quite jelled.

So, is this issue any better?

The opening pages has Lex Luthor and the Legion of Doom having a meeting. Then from out of nowhere, Leviathan shows up!

They talk about the killing of Sam Lane. There is a tussle that happens.

And that is when you start to realize that this is a whole bunch of filler that doesn’t add up to much at all.

So we see a lot of unnecessary backstory for the villains.

Then, we flash to the never ending fight that has been occurring over the last two issues. There really has been no advancing on this fight until this issue.

We then flash around. The book goes back and forth in time so much that I lost interest and hardly cared. By the time we get to the “shocking moment” I had tuned out. Bendis just meanders with his script and it is trite and dull.

John Romita, Jr. is obviously just passing through while doing the art on this story and that’s okay. He does his best but the writing doesn’t do him any favors.

Hopefully, this picks up. Right now, it is barely a story and has nothing to it to have me keep me reading.

RATING: C-
