Here we go again. Bendis is really making my head hurt with this latest issue of Superman.
It seems like he made a decision to reveal Superman’s identity to the world and then had no idea what to do after. That is certainly what it feels like trying to read this book.
Superman goes up against Mongul at the beginning of this issue.
It is a nicely drawn fight here by artist Kevin Maguire. His art alone is the reason to purchase this book. Sadly, it cannot save the book from the lack of a compelling story or having good characters.
We get another story interspersed with all of this, that basically is just Lois Lane talking to Agent Chase about Superman related things.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t advance the story. Instead we get a bunch of dialogue that shows us how impressed Bendis is with himself.
Or, at least, that’s what it feels like.
Not much happens with the fight scene either. It is just two characters beating the hell out of each other lifelessly. Eventually, this all stops and Bendis wraps up his story with a sweet scene with Lois and Clark. That last page was the only nicely executed moment in the entire issue to be honest.
Bendis proved again with this issue that he has no direction planned ahead. I wish he did. I also wish Maguire had better material to work with. If he did, he might be on a classic run here rather than an extremely tepid one.
