‘All-America Comix #1’ (review)

Written by Joe Casey
Art by Dustin Nguyen
Published by Image Comics

It has been over 15 years since writer Joe Casey and artist Dustin Nguyen worked together last (Wildcats 3.0).

The world has changed a lot since then. I first heard about this book about three or four years back. I have to say, that while this book has some decent moments, it really wasn’t worth the wait.

That isn’t to say that the comic doesn’t have it’s charms!

The book opens up with a big battle scene.

It is a battle that is very political and is a tad off putting. That being said, Nguyen does a great job on visuals and the battle scenes in general are pretty fluid. Then, we get going with the plot.

In the battle, we meet America Vasquez.

We get to see her fight against some “superheroes” and “supervillains” as such.

It is a bit violent, and actually a bit weird. It does sort of feel like Joe Casey is working out some of his problems with the comic book industry here with his script.

We get to see America talking to her friends and having a few fights.

But there is something deeper in the plot that starts to come into play. You see, America has dimension traveling powers.

Things star to get weird for America. She starts to question her reality. That is the best part of the book, to be honest.

The plot is strong. The art is strong. The dialogue made me wince. This may have been written four years ago, but it seems that it wasn’t updated.

It is a shame, because it actually feels dated. And that is the hardest thing in this comic to get past.

RATING: C+
