I generally enjoy anything that Rick Remender touches as a writer. He writes some of the most intriguing characters out there. Sometime he does go a bit overboard, but I generally can find something to like in most anything he does.
So, here is his newest venture called Scumbag.
This issue starts off pretty in a nutty way.
In the first few pages, we are introduced to Ernie Ray Clementine. He is a badass biker who is pretty much the biggest scumbag in comics in quite some time. We see him at a biker bar mouthing off and getting himself into some trouble.
It is then that Mr. Clementine accidentally injects himself with a power inducing serum.
The results are shocking. We get to see Ernie’s power’s form and we get to see his ineptitude. It is funny and completely off the wall. Clementine seems like the last person who should ever have these powers.
He is also very self centered.
That is when we see that there is an apocalypse level event about to happen. We see that Ernie may be the only one on the planet capable of stopping it.
The question is: will he?
Or will his selfishness be the end of mankind?
Remender does a great job on the script. However, the star here is Lewis Larosa. This may be the best artwork he has ever done. It brings everything up to a higher level, making this first issue pretty sweet.
I hope the next issue is as good as this one is. Well done.
